The Fork in the Road

The Fork in the Road

Most of us have heard the poem by Robert Frost: "Two roads diverge in a yellow wood. And Sorry I could not travel both. But being one traveller long I stood, and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the under grove... I took the one less travelled by. And that has made all the difference."

I remember being a senior in high school in Regional choir singing a rendition of this song. I had a choice then. My father wanted me to go to school to be a doctor. I was feeling led to be a musician, which no one then was supporting in my life.

I auditioned for the 2 coveted solo positions and was chosen to sing for the first night of our performance. I could hardly believe it. But somehow being chosen for that solo was my answer. The road less travelled.

Though it would be hard and NYC--my goal to be a Broadway singer/dancer/actor--to someone like me whose family was virtually poor--would be a crazy choice. And Carnegie-Mellon, the college I auditioned for and got in over 1000's of applicants, on student loans and scholarships was nuts... but I took that road. And life led me to so many interesting places.

Most interestingly, it didn't lead me to a career in just music though. It led me to a life still unfolding with so many colors I can't even define what I am or what I do for a living. I just get up every morning and do what's on my plate as authentically as possible, with careful, loving consideration. And God takes care of the rest.

Up until two years ago, at the beginning of every year I would go away for a week and do a prospectus, creating my goals for the year. What am I going to write this year? How many pages? What can I do to make my coaching/hypnosis business grow? How can I see that through? And so on...

Most of the time, I would see exciting change in my life. But two years ago I woke up with a dream. I looked down the road I had been travelling and saw that the constant planning and pushing forward was causing me anxiety. I noticed that there was a third road that I hadn't noticed before unfolding in my mind.

I saw was a peaceful place. Spirit said: "You have prepared enough. It is time to rest. Let me write your goals." On the page before me I wrote. "When you hear the knock of angels on your door. Simply answer it!"

And that, my friend, has made all the difference to my happiness.
