Altruism

Altruism

All-true-ism... How often have we had selfless concern for the well-being of others? Most of the time for me it's allfalsism... I can't disconnect from the person or thing I'm helping--or even the result of who it is I'm concerned about. This must be something you work for in a magical Tibetan state of mind when you have no belongings and live on two 10-minute meals of porridge a day. How do we disconnect from the very thing we pour our hearts into?

There is some magic involved, but me thinks someone had the right idea whenever he suggested the practice of altruism. It is a matter of working from a place of your own soul's need to do what you are called to do first and above all. What the results are, may be icing or dung. It's not our call.

Times in my life I have been spiritually asked in my heart to do something that didn't appeal to anyone around me, especially me. But I knew it would be best for those concerned. So, I did it blindly, with faith. Years later (some 20 years) one person involved actually told me he was sorry and that it changed his life forever. But for 20 years I never knew. Can you blindly do what you are called to do without expecting preconceived results?
