Friend or Foe?

Friend or Foe?

What is a friend, I’ve asked myself over the years? So many people profess to be a friend yet don’t have the fortitude or the authenticity of heart to make a difference in anyone’s life. I wonder, too, how many people have thought those very things about me over the years. Have I come up short as a friend or confidente? Have I made someone feel so badly that they have somehow decided it would be better to disregard me than embrace me?

So many times we are faced with life situations where we find out that friends have conspired against us, spoken ugly things against us, chosen to forgo the relationship they had with us to be BFF’s with one of our exes. I know I certainly have had my share of these times and these types of friends. And my heart has grown weary with grief worrying about it.

But friendship has many facets and kinds. Friendship is like love. There isn’t just one kind of love. We love pets, flowers, skiing, lovers, music, children—all differently.

I have 2500 “friends” on Facebook. Do I invite each of them to my house for dinner each week? Ah, no… Some of them are merely acquaintances, and some I barely know. That’s not to say I wouldn’t like to know some of these people more, but who has the time to befriend 2500 people in a close manner? No one.

So, it’s important to realize that when you find a few people whom you trust and care about. And they care about you back. Damn. You have something incredibly special and rare. Value it with everything you have. Cherish with your whole heart.

We can’t know what others think about us or can we help them decide what to feel. We can dishonor ourselves by trying to be many things for many people. But when we are authentic to ourselves and our beliefs in Who made us, we share the greatest gift of love. This gift of love you can’t manufacture or give with fraud. People may accuse you of many things, but only One can know your heart. Therefore, be faithful to that one, and you will be faithful to many.
